Volkswagen just put a mid-size electric sedan on sale in China for under $12,000. FAW-Volkswagen's Jetta brand launched the M6, its first battery-electric vehicle, on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, starting at 79,800 yuan ($11,880), CnEVPost and CarNewsChina reported.

Prices and trims

  • 465 Pro: 79,800 yuan; 42.9 kWh battery, 113 kW motor, 465 km CLTC range, 0-100 km/h in 8.3 seconds.
  • 555 Max: 89,800 yuan; 51.9 kWh battery, 145 kW motor, 555 km CLTC range, 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds.
  • 555 Ultra: 99,800 yuan; same battery and motor as the Max, plus highway and city navigation assist (NOA).

Pre-sales opened Sept. 28 at 80,800 yuan, so the launch price is 1,000 yuan lower, CnEVPost said. CarNewsChina put the 465 km and 555 km CLTC figures at roughly 377 km and 450 km on the WLTP cycle.

What's inside

The M6 is a single-motor, front-wheel-drive sedan built on Jetta's in-house "Jiesi" electric architecture. It is 4,806 mm long with a 2,820 mm wheelbase. It uses lithium iron phosphate batteries from CALB and charges from 30% to 80% in 25 minutes, according to CnEVPost. The top trim's driver assistance runs on Horizon Robotics' Journey 6M chip with a vision-based system, and the cabin has a 15.6-inch central screen with Doubao, DeepSeek and Qwen AI assistants plus CarPlay support.

Jetta is also offering launch benefits it values at 26,000 yuan, including first-year coverage for accidents involving driver assistance for original owners of cars with highway or city navigation assist, used non-commercially. The brand, which began operating as a separate company in Chengdu in January, plans five new models by 2028 and is targeting 400,000 to 500,000 annual sales, CnEVPost and Sina Auto reported.

The launch adds to a crowded low-price segment in China, where BYD just put flash charging in its second-generation Seagull from 65,900 yuan.
